1955년부터 라인하르트(1913년-1967년)는 검은색 또는 거의 검은색에 가까운 어두운 색만으로 작품을 제작했다. 한눈에 봐도 이 단색조의 그림들은 한 가지 색조로 그려진 것임을 알 수 있다. 그러나 일단 눈이 적응된 후, 그의 그림들을 더 가까이서 살펴보면, 아주 미묘한 뉘앙스의 차이를 느낄 수 있다. 라인하르트의 작품의 특기할만한 점은 <추상화>(1963)와 같은 그림들에서 볼 수 있듯이, 정사각형의 커다란 캔버스를 아홉 개의 작은 정사각형들(각각의 크기가 동일함)로 구성했다는 것이다.

이와 같은 작품들로 라인하르트는 '미술로서의 미술'을 만들고자 시도했다. 이에 따르면 다른 모든 것들은 '그 밖의 모든 것들'일 뿐이다. 간결하고 지적인 이 그림들은 그 자체로 중요할 뿐만 아니라, 미니멀리즘 미술과 개념미술의 논리적이고 합리적인 성격을 예고한다는 점에서도 의의가 있다. [ 네이버 지식백과 ]
