에펠탑이 상징하는 테크놀로지의 승리와 기계주의 미학은 20세기 초반에 들어 파리에 근거지를 둔 이탈리아 출신의 작가들이 형성한 미래주의(Futurism)나 오르피즘(Orphism)을 중심으로 재해석되었다. 오르피즘은 1912년 시인 기욤 아폴리네르(Guillaume Apollinaire)가 로베르 들로네(Robert Delaunay)의 서정적이면서도 미래적인 그림을 보고 처음으로 사용된 비평 용어이다.
들로네의 오르피즘은 큐비즘과 미래주의를 절충한다는 비판을 받았지만 그의 에펠탑은 피카소나 브라크, 미래주의자들의 작품에서 느낄 수 없는 파리의 역동성과 현대적인 느낌을 가장 잘 보여준다.
특히 에펠탑을 여러 각도에서 그리면서도 에펠탑 주변의 건물을 함께 표현하여 들로네는 변화하는 파리의 풍경과 테크놀로지의 승리, 문명의 진보 등 파리의 현대성(modernity)을 시각적으로 표상하였다. 파리에서 가장 높은 구조물이자 철제로 만들어진 에펠탑은 고대의 아치, 오벨리스크, 수직의 원주 이상으로 모뉴멘털한 기념비였다. [ 정연심 홍익대학교 예술학과 교수 / 에펠탑과 오르피즘 ]
